Vive Controller: Troubleshooting connectivity issues
The following article describes the recommended steps for checking connectivity issues with the Vive hand controllers
Make sure that your device has enough battery charge
Charge the controller for 5-10 minutes and then test its performance to see if there is any improvement. If you don’t notice any difference, make sure there is no dust or build-up in the charging slot before connecting it to the charge cable, or try using a different charge cable.
Check how long the controller waits idle before turning off
Open SteamVR, then with the station keyboard, click on the menu icon.
Then go to Settings > Startup / Shutdown, and then set the time in Turn off controllers after to be Never.
Re-pairing the controllers in SteamVR
To turn on the controllers, simply press the System button briefly. Then, open the SteamVR app and go to the Devices section. Click on “Pair Controller” and carefully follow the given instructions to complete the pairing process.

During the pairing process, the status light will blink blue. Once the controllers are successfully paired with the headset, the status light will turn solid green.
Ensure that the base stations have adequate line-of-sight to the controllers
Move the controller around the area and pay attention to any areas where it loses connection. Take note of the controller’s position in relation to the base station it is connected to.
It is possible that a light source may be blocking the base station from detecting the controller in certain spots.
Another possibility is that the base stations have been moved or are not properly positioned. Each base station has a 150-degree horizontal field of view and a 110-degree vertical field of view.
Enable bluetooth connectivity and update the base station firmware:
To enable Bluetooth on the SteamVR app, follow these steps:
1. Open the SteamVR app.
2. Click on the menu icon, then go to Devices and select Bluetooth Settings.
3. Toggle the Enable Bluetooth option.
Note: If the Bluetooth driver for the link box needs to be updated, click on Update Bluetooth Driver. After installing the Bluetooth driver, restart the station PC and then relaunch the SteamVR app.
To update your base stations, do one of the following:
Option 1. Click on the menu icon, then go to Devices and select Update Device. Choose the base stations from the list.
Option 2. If you see the update icon, hover over it to check if the firmware is out of date. If it is, click on Update Device.
Throughout out the update process, follow the onscreen instructions to complete.
The power light indicator flashes red, even after a full charge
Press the power button for a few seconds and wait for the tone.
If the controller indicator is flashing red, place it on charge for 15 minutes.
If it will still not work and re-pairing the controller does not fix the issue, please raise a support ticket.
