Workaround for YouTube VR rotation issue

Table of Contents

YouTube VR has a bug where only one ‘eye’ is visible in VR mode when the device is in portrait orientation. A third party app can be installed as a work around.

Installation: Rotation app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pranavpandey.rotation&pli=1

Please note that this is a third party app and as such you use it at your own risk.

  • Option 1 – install directly on each device using the Play Store app
  • Option 2 – install from the web-version of the Play Store (navigate to the link above, then select ‘install on other devices’ and choose from the list)

Note: For both of the above options, you need to be logged into the correct Google account

In-app set up (Part 1 – config):

  1. Skip through the onboarding screens to start set up
  2. Scroll down to ‘App Orientation’ (with the Android icon)
  3. Tap ‘REQUEST’ and follow the prompts to enable the ‘usage access’ permission for the ‘Rotation’ app. Note: this permission will display a warning. Tick the check box, wait for the timer to end, then tap OK to continue
  4. Press the back button to return to the ‘Rotation’ app, then scroll down to ‘App Orientation’ again
  5. Scroll down and find ‘YouTube’ in the list (note: this is a ‘system’ app not a ‘user’ app)
  6. Tap on it and select the landscape icon (your selection will be auto-saved)

Turning on app auto-start:

  1. Exit the Setup part of the app by clicking on the back arrow in the top left of the screen twice.
  2. On the hamburger menu inside the Rotation app, select ‘Settings’
  3. Enable ‘Start on boot’

The above step can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PBNEKYCjFI

In-app set up (Part 2 – starting the service):

  1. On the hamburger menu inside the Rotation app, select ‘Home’
  2. Tap the “Start” button in the lower right of the screen
  3. Tap ‘REQUEST’ and follow the prompts to enable the ‘Display over other apps’ and ‘Modify system settings’ permissions for the ‘Rotation’ app
  4. You may need to tap the back button to return to the ‘Rotation’ app in between each permission setting.
  5. Once all permissions are enabled, the service should automatically start
    1. the ‘Start’ button will now appear as a ‘Stop’ button and you should see the notification in your notification bar

Troubleshooting

Auto-rotation isn’t working:

  • Check that the Rotation background service is running (it should show up in the notifications bar if it’s active)
  • If someone closes the Rotation background service, you need to open the app and hit ‘start’ again to run it. It will then auto-start from then on as expected. If left turned off, it will not auto-start (i.e. restarting the phone doesn’t fix this)
