Learning Sequence

Introduction

  • Activate your students’ prior knowledge by asking them to write down what they know about Asia in 2 minutes. Students can either write their ideas on page 2 of the Student Digital Notebook, or in their HASS/Geography books.
  • Choose two or three students to share what they know with the class.
  • Show the world map on Slide 3 of the Journey Through Asia Teaching Deck and ask students which coloured continent on the map is Asia. Click on the slide to reveal which continent it is. Discuss how close Asia is to Australia, and what that might mean for our country (having a close relationship for tourism/exports/imports etc.).
  • Explain to students that they will be taking a journey through various countries in Asia. In groups they will be moving through IMVR, HHVR and research stations to discover more about Asia.
  • Using slide 4, students can choose two Asian countries that they would like to focus on. Invite students to write their chosen countries on slide 3 of the Journey Through Asia Student Digital Notebook Let them know that they are free to change their mind during the lesson if one of their chosen countries isn’t interesting to them.

Development

Introduce the stations students will engage in:

Station based learning

Station-based Learning in 15-20 min interval rotations

Station 1 – IMVR (Slide 6 of Journey Through Asia Teaching Deck)

Using Google Earth VR, students need to complete the following:

  • Locate the continent of Asia
  • Find one of their chosen countries and travel to it
  • Enter ‘Street View’ and walk the streets of their country

Students complete the following reflections on page 5 of the Student Digital Notebook:

  • Where is Asia located compared to Australia?
  • What did you first notice about Asia?
  • What did you find interesting while walking the streets?
  • Did you notice anything similar to Australia?

Station 2 – HHVR (Slide 7-8 of Journey Through Asia Teaching Deck)

In pairs or individually, students can choose from the following videos listed on slide 6 and 7 of the Journey Through Asia Student Digital Notebook to explore at least 2 countries in Asia.

Students write notes on page 8 of the Student Digital Notebook, focusing on:

  • The different environments seen on the video (nature / city / ocean)
  • Cultural practices they noticed (dance / food / celebrations)

Station 3 – Research (Slide 9-10 pf Journey Through Asia Teaching Deck)

Students research and compare their chosen 2 countries in Asia. Students can use slide 11 of the Journey Through Asia Student Digital Notebook to write notes, then they can complete their reflections on page 12 if time permits.

  • Write a short paragraph to summarise your chosen countries.
  • What similarities do these countries share?
  • What differences are there between these countries?

Display Slide 11 of the Journey Through Asia Teaching Deck to show students which group they are in and which task they will be doing first.

Conclusion

  • If time permits, invite one or two students to share their thoughts with the class.
